Ranking the Demon's Souls Bosses #20 (FINALE)

Our last boss...
Maiden Astraea

The boss you regret killing. I guess it's a good time now to talk about the Valley of Defilement. The Valley is the home for the abused and neglected citizens of Boletaria, pretty much a dumping ground for the Kingdom's unholy. It became notorious as a place where one could leave their own unwanted child to rot in the swamp, and you'll see said unwanted children lurking around. With these dreadful circumstances, Astraea the Sixth Saint of the Church, and her companion Garl Vinland traveled there in hopes of freeing the depraved souls consumed by the fog. The unwanted creatures living there attack anyone who tries to threaten Astraea, and try to collect their souls to offer to her. Astraea pledged herself to the will of a Demon's Soul to help ease the pain and suffering, rather than accepting the aid of a cruel God who would allow this kind of place to exist. The fight starts with Astraea telling you to leave and that no one in the Valley is a threat to anyone anymore, and there's nothing to pillage. Well sadly you can't leave. So there are two ways to fight Astraea, Either go the long way around and attack her from there, or go down the path where Garl Vinland is. I usually go the path where Garl is, it makes me feel less like a douchebag. Garl is there to protect Astraea from any harm. Garl is pretty different from other NPC fights. For one, he's the only guy I know of that can actually parry you, and it does a ton of damage, possibly killing you. He attacks with a giant hammer which does a ton of damage and has a high knockback. That knockback could knock you down into the plague infested swamp where you'll get attacked by the unwanted children of Boletaria (i'm not kidding). Garl can heal himself to full if he's low on health if you don't stun him in time. "Dearest Astraea, I've failed you." After killing Garl, all that's left is Astraea. Two things you could do here. You could attack her which will open up some dialogue like "Dear God, have mercy!" and "Is not your abandonment of us punishment enough?". Yeah so that's kind of heartbreaking. All she does is a small AOE and then heal up. Or you could do option 2, and talk to her. She'll comment on how you killed Garl and that she can no longer resist you."Do as you like. Take your precious Demon soul." Astraea will then kill herself and then the fight ends. You're reward is regret.

Maiden Astraea is in the same boat as say, Priscilla from DS1. Someone who wants nothing to do with the outside world because the outside world has been cruel and brutal to them. They don't want to fight you, but like it or not, you must defeat Astraea. Garl and the plague infested swamp are the real challenge here. Astraea herself isn't too hard, especially if you defeat Garl. I think because of Garl and the swamp, I'll place Astraea above Tower Knight.
