Cold War
"In a time of severely strained relations between the United States and the Soviet Union"

Shortly after midnight in a control room inside of a Soviet Union anti-aircraft warning center outside of Moscow, the system had suddenly started giving warnings and alerts of a nuclear attack that had launched from the United States towards Russia.

There was a big overhead display with huge letters that said "СТАРТ"
(English: START)

The Soviet early warning computer had to go through 30 levels of security checks before the confirmation of a missile launch. The machine had reported that the level of verification of the incoming missile was maximum

They had 28 minutes left before the impact.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By protocol, once the high military command had been reported of a confirmed nuclear attack, there would be a mutual assured destruction, whereas the Soviets would fire back with another nuclear attack towards the United States.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The officer in charge had ordered everyone to double check in case of a potential malfunction. Everyone had confirmed that there was indeed a missile incoming, but except for one unit, the visual channel. The missile was not confirmed visually.

The Visual Channel had reported that there were no missiles incoming. However, this report could not be confirmed as they could not see anything due to the satellite being in the terminator line.

Due to the lack of visual confirmation, the officer in charge decided to wait before informing the high military command of the missile strike.

However, the situation grew worse as the system alerted 4 more incoming missiles.

At this point, the officer in charge had to make a decision.
In the end, he reported to the high military command that it was a false alarm.
