Crap Game of the Day #42: South Park

Early South Park games were pretty... eh. South Park was released on the N64 in 1998 and later the PS1 and the PC in 1999. The game was released near the end of the second season of South Park. I personally don't watch South Park, my parents had this game when I was little, and this is the first M rated game I've played. I'm so cool. So this is a first-person shooter and not a very good one. The game was made by Acclaim, the same guys who made Turok and this game runs off the Turok 2 engine. The story is about this comet crashing into South Park and all kinds of "crazy spooky shit" is happening. You can take control of one of the 4 main boys from the start. There's no difference between them except for different voice lines. They talk a lot so choose Kenny if you get annoyed quickly. You can find the other 3 boys and team up with them. Make sure you do that so you can hold more weapons because you can only hold 2 with one boy. The first thing you'll notice are the graphics and draw distance. The draw distance is pretty poor and the graphics are flat and basic. They tried to turn the show into 3D and it looks ok on the N64, but the PS1 version looks awful. The gameplay is pretty basic, you go from start to end killing random enemies with random weapons. Enemies like turkeys, clones, robots, aliens, cows, etc. The enemy AI is pretty dumb. Most of them just charge you down or shoot random projectiles at you. Other enemies include tank enemies that can spawn the smaller basic mobs. Like a UFO summoning aliens or giant turkeys laying eggs hatching into small turkeys. You have to kill the tanks, if you miss one, you need to play another level to kill them. It gets annoying if you miss more than two. There isn't that much in terms of gameplay, you just shoot random enemies and then fight a boss at the end. The only thing that might keep your attention are the characters, all voiced by Trey and Matt. It's not that funny but there are bits and pieces that are pretty good. For some reason, the audio on the PS1 version is terrible compared to the N64. The N64 version actually has pretty good sound mixing, the PS1 has fuzzy audio and it gets really irritating especially when you fight the damn turkeys. The music isn't that good. I certainly remember the tracks but they aren't something I wouldn't listen to all the time. The game also has multiplayer, but it's just a deathmatch arena. You can unlock different characters by playing through the main game but they all act the same. I don't think this is the worst early South Park game. Certainly better than South Park Rally and Chef's Love Shack. Just play Stick of Truth or Fractured But Whole if you want you South Park gaming fit.
