About
If you're a bit older than me, you've probably heard of this guy in the news... Most likely not in the best light. But let's make something abundantly clear now, Chechen republic (we're talking about now) and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria are 2 different things. Ichkeria was a separatist movement achieving de-facto independence in 1991-2000 and after the fall of, it was doing all of the messed up things you might now Chechnya for, understood, k lets go. Chechnya falls into three physical regions from south to north. In the south is the Greater Caucasus, the crest line of which forms the republic’s southern boundary. The second region is the foreland, consisting of the broad valleys of the Terek and Sunzha rivers, which cross the republic from the west to the east, where they unite. Third, in the north, are the level, rolling plains. What you will notice in Russian republics, that most of the time, ethnic minorities that republics were made for, rarely make more than 70% of the population but in Chechnya, over 95% of the population is Chechen. It's caused mostly by the fact that Russians were expelled during Ichkeria days. Crossing into Chechnya from Russia is like entering another dimension, People are Sunni Muslims, Alchochol is sold legally only from 8.00 to 10.00 AM and prohibited for all other times, And sure you can be your normal orthodox Russian and nobody will have a problem with that (if you don't care about the fact that there's only one church in Grozny). After the Chechen wars, Chechnya's economy literally imploded and only started to get better with Russia's help. The backbone of the economy has been petroleum, and drilling was mainly undertaken in the Sunzha River valley between Grozny and Gudermes. And whatever you think of Russia, you can't deny that they at least TRY to get Chechnya back on their feet. Unemployment decreased from 67% in 2006 to 21.5% in 2014, And Grozny got some shiny skyscrapers. Remember when I said in the beginning that in 1991 Chechnya de-facto achieved independence, why did they lose it then? well, they could be normal irrelevant country, but they kept going bigger after Chechen based militias tried to declare the other Islamic Russian Republic, Dagestan independent in a "friendly" invasion and a series of apartment bombs that killed around 300 people in several Russian cities, including Moscow, were blamed on the Chechen separatists. Russia used them as a reason to detain Ichkeria. The second Chechen war began in August 1999, and de facto ended in February 2000 after Grozny fell but officially, in 2009 as Chechen rebels remained super active til 2009, carrying out various acts of terrorism in Russia and sieging Grozny multiple times, sporadical fighting still occurs in more mountainous regions.
