(not so) fun modern pirate fact!

Since this raffle talks about pirates, figured I'd link Keelhauling here as well

Piracy has always been a thing; ever since the dawn of the first humans until modern times that we live in today, piracy existed in various forms, most notably known for their robbery.
While the most known picture of a pirate is that of the pirate's golden age in the 1500's, today's pirates aren't as "nice".
Instead of going for adventures across the seven seas seeking treasure buried in sand, today's pirates rob commercial ships and spray anyone unfortunate enough to get in their way with a mounted gunner sat afront their speedboat.
This is not to say 1500's pirates weren't brutal, but today's would rob you from your belongings without ever saying 'Arr!'

Piracy continues to ravage chaos even today, most commonly found in east Asia. There were many reports of assaults, but one that I'd like to talk about is the Somali pirate attacks of the 2000's.

The Somalia pirate attacks were a series of maritime incidents that occurred of the coasts of Somalia, beginning in the early 2000's and peaking in 2010. The attacks consisted of targeting commercial vessels, hijacking ships, and even holding crew for ransom.
These incidents were brought to light, having gotten global attention on the matter due to the frequent attacks on the vessels.

Pirates often used a tactic where they'd approach a larger vessel with a number of their own boats, often armed, bombarded the vessel. Once onboard, they'd take control of the crew, holding them hostage and demanding significant amounts of money for the crew's freedom.

Having needed help to stop the pirate assaults on the vessels, the Somali government reached out, to which the international community responded by deploying naval forces to engage the pirates, as well as combining powers with shipping companies to help provide better protection against attacks.
The use of armed guards on boards, hardening of the vessel's armor and escort by navy forces were only a few of the protective methods employed to protect the vessels from attackers.

Thanks to these methods, the numbers of successful pirate attacks began to decline, and the threat posed by Somali's pirates greatly diminished.
Somalia wasn't the only place who benefited from the protective changes, however, and such methods were spread to more areas in the world where sea piracy was a threat.

However, pirate attacks still continue to occur, and unfortunately are still successful from time to time.
They very often hurt those who are innocent, going as far as to sometimes target humanitarian vessels bringing essential needs to communities who lack them.
They mostly do it because of misidentification, lack of protection or just to disrupt the supplies from arriving. Either way, massive assholes.

In conclusion, modern pirates suck, stay safe and vigilant.
Yer scallywags!
