Rare/Expensive Video Games #4: Cheetahmen 2

Well... I didn't say all rare games had to be good right? Cheetahmen 2 was the sequel to the original Cheetahmen game found on the very infamous Action 52 game cartridge for the NES. Action 52 was a game released back in 1991 with 52 games on it. The games were all really buggy, glitchy, and very bare bones. Most of the games are just water-downed versions of better NES games. Not to mention that the original selling price of the game was $200. That's a load of shit lemme tell ya. The Cheetahmen game on Action 52 was nothing special, but probably the most complete game in the whole set. Let's dive into the bastard sequel.

Just like the first game, it's a side scroller where you play as 3 different Cheetahmen. One with a crossbow, one buff cheetah that punches things, and one that uses nunchucks. The gameplay is just walking to the right and killing things that spawn in so fast you barely have time to react to it. The controls are really bad, using the same shit controls from Action 52. Explaining bad controls is hard to do without actually experiencing the game yourself so I'll leave it at that. The graphics are pretty bad, looking like the original Super Mario Bros done by a child in Microsoft Paint. The game is very short, only having around 6 levels. Sometimes the game won't even load into the last 3 levels leaving you stuck in limbo unless you get lucky. The whole game is just unfinished... and there's a reason for it.

Why so expensive?
The thing about Cheetahmen 2 is that... it was never publicly released. The game went unfinished and was stored away. It wasn't until 1996 where the cartridges were found inside of a warehouse in Florida, and they were eventually sold in a secondhand market. Only 1,500 copies of this game are known to exist, and it's one of the most expensive NES games ever. A copy could go around for at least $1,300. No way I would be spending that much money on a single game. Besides, this game is fucking dogshit anyways.

Even if the game was actually completed, it probably would still be pretty terrible. After all, it was made by the same people who created Action 52. Believe it or not, both Cheetahmen 2 and Action 52 are getting a redux. Yeah, the original team and maybe some other folks are remastering the original games to make them fully functional. It's weird seeing a very infamous and dysfunctional 30 year old game getting better treatment than most of Nintendo's franchises (way to hit a low hanging fruit there).
