Mac Monday #16

Today we look at the last pre-millenial Apple desktop. A computer that encapsulates Apple's old design language before the introduction of the iMac and products designed similarly to it. It is the PowerMac G3 (Beige)

Name: Gossamer (PowerMac G3 Desktop, 1997)
CPU: 233 MHz PowerPC 750 (G3, overclocked to 266MHz)
RAM: 160MB DDR
Storage: 9GB Maxtor HDD, CD-ROM Drive, 1.44MB, 3 1/4in FDD
Graphics: ATI 3D RAGE II 2MB VRAM

As noted above, the PowerMac G3 line (Colloquially known as the G3 Beige) was the last computer to use Apple's old beige designs before switching to the new colorful plastics of the early 2000s. It was also the last Apple computer with a floppy drive and the last one to use what is known as the "Old World" firmware, which was used on computers prior to 1998. The Beige G3 models also came with a "Personality Card," a sound card or combination sound and A/V card specially designed for the G3 line. And it sports a wonderfuly easily serviceable design reminiscent of many old Apple products, unlike the locked down designs of today. In 1999 the PowerMac G3 was redesigned to adopt the iMac's transparent plastic design language and teal/white color scheme, bringing an end to the "beige box" design philosophy Apple had used since their beginnings.
