So, I watched When the Wind Blows (1986)
[MAJOR spoilers ahoy!]
After surviving both World Wars, elderly British couple Jim and Hilda Bloggs settle in a small cottage in the countryside where they plan to live off the rest of their days in peace. However, Jim learns from the papers that the Soviet Union and the UK are at the brink of war, and fearing that they might be bombed, be starts building a small shelter in his home, much to Hilda's amusement. That is short-lived, however, as they do indeed get bombed, but survive! At first, they're rightfully saddened by their home's destruction, but still hopefully optimistic that rescue will come. You see, up until this point, the film is mostly amusing antics, but when you realize that both are slowly being irradiated by the nuclear fallout, it grows only more hopeless and depressing as we watch how Jim and Hilda gradually slip away to radiation sickness. OK, funny-then-depressing story aside, I really enjoyed how it was animated, incorporating both traditional and stopmotion animation, it makes for some truly wonderful visuals to accompany it. As for characters, the Bloggs fit in well with the story - after all, they're just an elderly couple trying to survive in a situation they don't really understand, still holding their beliefs that everything will be fine, despite the implication that the world is beyond fvcked in the end. Well, if you enjoy stories about the apocalypse that would reflect a real-life situation and not some dystopian worlds like Fallout or something, then this is for definitely for you!
