Scrapshot #6: I Can't Believe That People Used To Be Able To Do This
So you all probably know about the no advertising auctions rule right? Well, bet you don't know about the reason it was created. Or maybe you do and it's just me and I'm stupid. In any case, that is the topic for this week.
Once upon a time, waaaaaay long ago, people were allowed to advertise in boring raffles like this or this or this, filling the raffles page with advertisements, basically. It was pretty commonplace, an average thing to do. Of course, with any trend or fad, people are bound to make parodies, like those "legit" vintage earbuds...Oh, the potential. Sorry, I'm getting off track here.
On February 15, 2017, Jesse created this raffle with a poll asking users whether or not they wanted to keep or remove the rule about advertising in auctions. Surprisingly (to me at least) a majority of people wanted to keep them up, for whatever reason. However, about a week later, on April 24, 2017, Jesse announced that advertising auctions in raffles was no longer allowed on the site, as they felt that it cluttered the raffles section at an overwhelming majority. This caused a rift on the site; some people were glad to see this go, and others felt that the ads were completely justified.
Ultimately, I think that it was benificial to the site, causing the raffles to be more based on generosity rather than trying to get people to buy your expensive pixels. I don't know though, maybe it really wasn't that bad. I'd love to hear your opinions in the comments.
