Soulsborne Bosses from Worst to Best #134: True Corrupted Monk

Now this is the kind of fight I enjoy. The True Corrupted Monk is found right at the start of the Fountainhead Palace. As you're walking across the bridge, the Monk will drop down and fight you. Now I did talk about the False version of the Monk a long time ago. The first phase of the True version is pretty much the same as the False version with some differences. Now the Monk you really have to focus on doing more vitality damage rather than trying to fill up her posture bar, at least early on. Her attacks remind me a lot of the Dancer in DS3, very smooth looking and tricky at points. Unlike the False version, the True Monk has two other phases. The second phase remains largely the same except with a new shadow clone attack. The stage will be covered in fog and shadows of the Monk will appear and attack you, kind of like Mergo's Wet Nurse. You can either dodge accordingly or jump around and dodge the attacks. This phase is kind of dumb for one reason, you can skip it. During the fog phase, if you jump up on a tree you can see the Monk standing there. You can jump on her for a deathblow completely bypassing this phase. I didn't know about this the first time sadly. The third phase has her sprout a centipede from her neck (this centipede makes her undying btw). She'll gain the really strong spinning attack from her False counterpart, and a spit attack which causes terror build up. Terror is not fun. Finish up the third phase, stab the Mortal Blade into the centipede, and you're good to go, very cool. Now there really isn't clear lore on the monk, but there is an old Japanese folk story she's based on. It's called Yao Bikuni (800 years Buddhist priestess). It's about a fisherman who caught a strange fish with a human face called a Ningyo, a mermaid-like creature who's flesh is said to grant a long life. He served it's meat to his guests, but they wisely hid the meat in their robes rather than eat it. A drunk man thoughtlessly gave the meat to his daughter and she ate it. She would later marry but she stayed young while the husband grew old. She eventually became a Buddhist nun and wandered various countries. She came to hate her immortality and her life was filled with emptiness and suffering. At 800 years old, she finally died despite her immortality, having simply lost the will to live. The OST is really good in this fight. The first phase is shared with the False version, but it now has a second part to it which sounds way better. Only two phases of this track oddly enough, even though it's a three phase boss. Couple of other bosses have this too weirdly enough. Will never forget the Monk's laugh though.
